VITAMIN B12

Vitamin B12 is an essential vitamin that plays a role in vital bodily functions. It is needed in the production of the red blood cells, nerve cells and DNA formation, the genetic material in all of our cells.

Vitamin B12 cannot be produced by the body. It is found naturally in foods such as:

  • Meat.
  • Fish.
  • Dairy products (milk, cheese, yoghurt).
  • Eggs.
  • Fortified in some cereals.

Some individuals can absorb little or non vitamin B12 from the stomach, others have a deficiency that can lead to anaemia.

The Vitamin B12 injection is an effective way to treat a deficiency and is absorbed into the body within a few hours after administration

There is only one type of vitamin B12 injection available in the UK – Hydroxocobalamin.

Vitamin B12 tablets known as Cyanocobalamin, can be bought from health stores, but are not as effective as the injection
